Agisting Alpacas
|
About UsWe are embarking on a new adventure, trying something that we have never done, coming from lives in the city and suburbia with the only four legged things we’ve owed being dogs and cats. Right now we are living in the suburbs of Aurora, Colorado. While we build our herd and research buying our land we agist our alpacas at Falkor Ranch Alpacas and Stargazer Ranch Alpacas. Our interest in alpacas began in 1997, while we lived in Colorado Springs. Life took us to Iceland, Virginia and back to Colorado, and all the while, we nurtured the idea of having an alpaca farm. After years of research and numerous farm visits, we bought our first alpaca in 2005. We are focused on improving the quality of the North American alpaca herd and promoting its fiber. To promote genetic diversity and increase our own breeding options, we are founding members of “Genetic Options,” a cooperative designed to give small businesses like ourselves maximum access to different bloodlines and herdsires. We want the fiber these wonderful animals produce to be a productive industry, and are members of “North American Alpaca Fiber Producers,” a cooperative designed to promote the North American alpaca fiber industry. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Why does the North American alpaca herd need improving? The quality of today’s alpaca fiber, whether it originates in South America, North America, Australia or any of the other places around the world where alpacas live, does not equal the quality of alpaca fiber found in pre-conquistador South America. What’s the big deal with genetic diversity? Alpacas were imported to North America from their indigenous lands in South America from 1993 to 1998, and then the registry of those animals was closed. There were only 2,452 animals in the original imports, and they varied in quality of animal and/or fleece. Of that group, there have been several that have proven their quality in the show ring and through their progeny. To keep the North American herd strong, healthy and producing quality offspring, all alpaca breeders need access to diverse genetics. |
